Trickster

Recently I had the pleasure to catch up with someone I had met on a job, but this time without the pressure of it being a commission. Daniel Cutting is a man of many skills, one of the most interesting being his ability to perform backflips whilst retaining control of a football. I had wanted to shoot Daniel again in my own studio, I felt that there really isn’t that many beautiful shots of a style of football that is so elegant…there are endless freestyle videos but trying to capture one perfect moment that shows an entire trick is something quite unique and a challenge I wanted.

With the help of some colourful gels and a smoke machine we set out to create a series of images whereby Daniel seemed to be simply appearing from the darkness, with the ball under control he moved gracefully. What was really interesting for me was to watch how the smoke reacted to his bodies movements, after a lot of trial and error we developed a ‘smoke system’ whereby we built up a background of smoke then finished it off with some more refined smoke infront for Daniel to move in to.

This was all shot in camera, one take. No extra smoke has been added at all. I roped in the skills of Terry Obiora at Version Post to work on the retouch for me, although cosmetically the retouch was minimal the real skill lay within pushing the coloured lights. Terry has a wonderful understanding of the gamut of a colour and how much it can be tinkered with.
