Respect All, Fear None

This collaboration between the exciting cgi agency FutureDeluxe – www.futuredeluxe.co.uk and myself came about because we simply wanted to make awesome imagery together and push our personal work.

It started with an idea I couldn’t shake out of my head when I thought of rugby, one of the power that the All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu possessed and how whenever I watched footage of him I kept seeing a snow plow effortlessly ploughing through like it was nothing.

With the image of Lomu smashing through enemies and knowing that the rugby world cup is set to be held in England next year we had the basis of our idea. We set out to explore the battle for England to try and win the rugby world cup now that it is back on home soil. We wanted to create a series of images that looked at the power and fierceness of rugby as a single hero battled his way through the wildness of the countryside as a team of enemies tried everything to stop him in his tracks.

The photography and retouch was by Philip Haynes with art direction on set and cgi being created by FutureDeluxe. This was a collaboration in every word of the sense, fusing Philip’s passion for shooting powerful sporting athletes and his fine attention to detail in retouch with FutureDeluxe’s ability to explore the surreal and organic world of cgi and combine it with photography.

It was great to work with the exceptionally talented Victoria Nugent again on make up. Victoria and I have been collaborating a lot this year on projects for The Quarterly and The Golden Fleece. I was lucky enough to grab her off the set of Sky’s Atlantis for a day.

Thank you to James and Xander from FD for coming on set and helping to take the imagery to another level, you really have warped my mind to the creative possibilities between photography and cgi!
